The Mirpur University of Science and Technology (MUST), Mirpur was established in 2009 by up-grading Mirpur Campus of the University of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (UAJK), Muzaffarabad. With the inception of the UAJK in 1980, the College of Engineering and Technology, the College of Home Economics and Institute of Islamic Studies were established as its constituent colleges and institute. The University College of Engineering and Technology and Institute of Islamic Studies were established in the premises of the then Government College for Boys, Mirpur while the University College of Home Economics was established in the premises of the Government College for Girls, Mirpur. The two colleges and the institute continued imparting education in the field of Electrical Engineering, Home Economics and Islamic Studies till 2001 as part of the UAJK. Later on, Department of Mechanical Engineering and Department of Computer Science and IT were also added to the system under the faculty of engineer

On 14 August 1947, Mirpur was part of the princely state of Kashmir under the rule of Maharaja Hari Singh. A revolt against his rule erupted with the advent of Pakistan. Mirpur district  ( ضلع میر پور ‬) is a  district  in  Azad Kashmir . [1]  The district is named after the main city,  Mirpur . The district of Mirpur has a population of 456,200 [2]  and covers an area of 1,010 km 2  (390 sq mi). The district is mainly mountainous with some plains. Its hot, dry climate and other geographical conditions closely resemble those of  Jhelum  and  Gujrat , the adjoining  districts of Pakistan .
